passive houses

Passive houses in the Czech Republic are in the range up to 15 kWh/m2a, while low-energy houses are in the range up to 50 kWh/m2a. Research shows that new buildings are generally in the range 80 – 140 kWh/m2 a.

Sufficient insulation is vital as well as use of all available energies in order to eliminate classic heating system. We are mainly speaking of solar energy, which should be considered in architectonic design of the house . The following items are vital:

• shape compactness
• building orientation to points of the compass
• direction and intensity of prevailing winds
• size of the building adequate to it´s purpose of use
• suitable wall glazing (maximum on the southern side, minimum on the northern side)
• suitable ventilation system

Another source of energy is metabolic heat of house inhabitants, heat of house hold appliances and heat from artificial lighting.

Another important thing is controlled ventilation system, which brings fresh air into each room. Placement of rooms without the need of heating (garage, store, pantry…) is also vital.

House provides very comfortable living with stable temperature all year round. The incoming air is heated in winter whereas in summer the house is shielded by using blinds. It is also suitable to install heat pump or solar panels, which help to decrease the energy intensity of the house, mainly heating of water.

Generally it is possible to save up to 30% of energies by applying the right house design.  The goal is simple and compact shape, placement on the plot and orientation to points of compass which will provide enough light to the residential premises. They are mainly situated in the south and west of the houses whereas the remaining room are situated to the south..
